Background of the Study
Speech event organization refers to the structured patterns that govern the initiation, progression, and closure of conversations. In Benue State, Tiv language interactions exhibit distinct organizational patterns that reflect the cultural and social fabric of the Tiv community. Traditional Tiv communication is characterized by clear conventions for turn-taking, greetings, and ritualized exchanges, which are critical for maintaining social order and effective dialogue (Uko, 2023). These conversational structures facilitate not only the exchange of information but also the reinforcement of community values and relationships. With the advent of modern communication influences, there is evidence that traditional speech event organization is undergoing change, potentially affecting the clarity and efficiency of interactions (Afon, 2024). This study examines how speech events are structured in Tiv discourse, exploring the mechanisms that guide conversation and how these structures support mutual understanding and cultural continuity. By analyzing recordings of community interactions and conducting ethnographic interviews, the research aims to provide a comprehensive overview of speech event organization in Tiv language practices.

Statement of the Problem
Traditional speech event organization in Tiv language interactions is increasingly challenged by modern communication practices. As younger generations adopt new linguistic styles influenced by urbanization and digital media, the established patterns of initiating, managing, and closing conversations are showing signs of disruption (Uko, 2023). This shift may lead to misunderstandings and a loss of cultural specificity, thereby undermining social cohesion. The limited research on the current state of speech event organization in Tiv further exacerbates this issue, making it difficult to formulate strategies for preserving these valuable communicative practices (Afon, 2024). This study seeks to address these challenges by examining the organizational patterns of Tiv speech events.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To document traditional speech event organization in Tiv interactions.

  2. To assess the impact of modern influences on these structures.

  3. To propose strategies for preserving effective speech event organization.

Research Questions

  1. How are speech events traditionally organized in Tiv discourse?

  2. What modern influences are altering these patterns?

  3. How can traditional speech event structures be preserved?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it investigates the organization of speech events in Tiv language interactions in Benue State, shedding light on how cultural norms structure communication. Its findings will benefit linguists, anthropologists, and cultural preservationists by offering recommendations to maintain traditional conversational practices amid modern influences (Uko, 2023; Afon, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to examining speech event organization in Tiv language interactions in Benue State and does not extend to other regions or communicative contexts.

Definitions of Terms

  • Speech Event Organization: The structured pattern of initiating, managing, and concluding conversations.

  • Tiv Language: The indigenous language of the Tiv people in Benue State.
